Lynn Philyaw Sensei

Welcome
Welcome to the Lake County Dojo of the Ryu Shu Kan Association, founded and headed by Lynn Philyaw Sensei.  Sensei Philyaw began studying in Peoria, IL, under Rev. Foster and Phillip Koeppel in 1964.  He is now a 7th degree Master.  We are also affiliated with the international United States Karate-Do Kai (USKK) and our sister dojo in Atlanta, GA.

Rather than the usual commercialized tournament-oriented approach, we focus on the development of power and practical self-defense.  Our focus on kata (long forms), kumite (sparring) and kihon (basic techniques) provides for thorough workouts, centering and solid self-defense training.  We also accent relaxation and breathing exercises, concentrating on power and eliminating any useless expenditure of energy.

Each student is guided through the art at an individual pace.  Because of our relatively small numbers and seasoned instructors (some having studied from 15-25 years), there’s much opportunity for individualized instruction.

Though we are disciplined and seek to expand our individual limits, we provide a very supportive rather than a competitive community.  We believe in encouraging students toward self-development and the achievement of their highest potential. Those looking for competition and fast promotion should look elsewhere.  We welcome any seeking true power, knowledge and personal growth.  Ours is an adult class, though we will accept students 13 years of age or older.

Location and Schedule
We now work out on Fridays from 6-8 P.M. at the College of Lake County but hope to add another evening session soon.  We also conduct and participate in special workshops and USKK tournaments, though such participation is not at all required or even strongly encouraged.
